DON’T KILL ANYBODY
& TAKE A DAY OFF
Ian called my attention to this. Mark Yaconelli reminds us of the commandments valuing taking a break and not taking a life – important lessons all.
END OF MONTH REPORT
I’m taking a look at this page’s site stats and we are a little down this month. I never did a blast newsletter and I think we are all very busy. Thanks to all those who are reading this page and please let me know if there is changes or improvements you would like to see.

PIOUS TOURISM???
There is some tough language and thought going on in the bloggosphere regarding "mission trips" of which we are lining up for this summer. "They’re too much like vacations, for one thing. I know kids have to raise the money and go places they wouldn’t go for fun. But as a participant in such trips, I’m thinking these trips felt self-indulgent. You have to throw in some fun just to be human. But then the trip seems much like a day at
the beach—which youth groups also do. They just don’t pat themselves on the back for being good." Read it all here along with the comments.

Caron’s proficiency in French was particularly important in his selection for the position. Read about it here.

BREAK??? WHAT BREAK???
Happens almost every time. I give myself a break on blogging and then spend time reformatting the look of the site. A previous commenter about the site indicated it was "too cluttered." Soooo, whadda ya’ think?
A MESSY TRAIL OF FOOTPRINTS
Back in the day (as the kids would say), you couldn’t do anything in youth ministry without inevitably running into the classic poem, Footprints. Now, it seems as if the authorship of the poem is being contested. Read more about that here and here. Seemingly, what was previously attributed to "author unknown" must now be credited to "authorship contested" where clearly none of those invlved in this mess should be interested in walking the beach alone.

SUMMER BEGINS
It’s Memorial Day weekend. By my count. there are 100 days of summer before we hit Labor Day. (and the beginning of the "next year.") This promises to be a very busy summer – the "to do" white board in the office has more added and less crossed off; I’ll be away nearly 1/3 of the time; a few personal projects; and . . .; and . . .; and . . .;
Meanwhile, I’m shutting down for the weekend, promising to be constant if not consistent about blogging this summer, and seeking warm, sunny days where the glow on my skin doesn’t come from the laptop screen.

POLITICS
Over two decades ago, Tom Peters co-wrote In Search of Excellence. His web site is still a frequent hit for me because we who work in youth ministry need to understand the nature of business. An example: Here is Tom’s take on the nature of implementation and and the role of politics.

THE NEXT STEP
Wow . . . There has been some severe writing of personal, emotional, political checks lately. The next step involves some careful cashing in. It is a busy, full, exiting time. Yesterday was a 7:30 am – 8:30 pm workday, so you’ll understand there is no podcast again.

WHERE AMERICAN NEWS FAILS US
TIME Magazine publishes four weekly editions. One for the US, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. This week’s US cover story focuses on "the Lean Economy" while the Asia and South Pacific covers examine the earthquake in China. Estimates are that 15,000 have been lost there. In Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady division and Yangon districts, an estimated 40,000 people are in need of vital relief, including food, shelter, water, medical care and psychological support. in the two of the areas hardest hit by Cyclone Nargis. In Haiti, the cost of basic food staples, including rice, beans and corn, has increased by an average of 50 percent in recent months in the Caribbean nation. In Burkina Faso in West Africa, earlier this month workers marched through the streets protesting the high cost of living, 15 provinces have already been declared as food insecure. Floods and drought late last year meant crop production was down. There are more than 2.5 million Indians are living with HIV. Learn more news from Catholic Relief Services

NO PODCAST
Out of all the things I do on the web-site. . . podcasts and slide-shares are the most time consuming. PROMISED LAND
The long exile in cubicle city is now completed. We have moved in our renovated offices back on the fifth floor which have all the things that we missed- like walls and windows. Sweet!
WHY MEATLOAF IS NO LONGER COMFORT FOOD
OK, we are gonna have a little, "I’m 50 years old and you are probably not" moment here. Back in my earliest young adult years, there was no MTV. Music acts would sometimes gain notoriety by failing their concerts and playing them on college campus. When I see clips like this, I still can imagine the 16mm projector clicking in the background. All that being said, there is a small part of me that dies just a little when I see this AT&T GoPhone commercial featuring my main man (along with pop idol Tiffany as the mom).

OH, THE PLACES YOU WILL GO
My power pointing skills have traveled more extensively then I have recently. I donated time to assist with powerpointing the auction for Cornerstone Ministry’s 12th annual Wine Country Golf Tournament. And, I just received this picture (click to enlarge) of a presentation given at he National Ministry Summit. Let’s review, Santa Rosa, Orlando. . . all from my sofa. (Something wrong about that!)

IT’S OVER?
TIME magazine seems to semi-ambivalently declare so this week with their cover story. Meanwhile, lessons can be learned here on how a frontrunner might lose a campaign. In life, politics, and youth ministry, we should be carefully to:
* correctly judge the mood of our followers
* master the rules of the game
* don’t overlook the little guys
* don’t be solely dependant on old connections
* be prepared for the long haul.

IRON MAN
The great thing about the annual super-hero movie every summer is that they (at least the first in the series of movies) always feature the origin of the character. And those stories are always about conversion.
The man character in Iron Man is Tony Stark, a military industrialist who relishes the "richness" of a multi-millionaire’s hedonistic lifestyle. This is played with a sort of "Oceans 11" cool by Robert Downey, Jr. who it might be suggested has dedicated much of life researching this part of the role. Early in the movie, he is left for dead by a bomb bearing the logo of his company, which is a pretty clear way to face the personal consequences of your corporate choices. What follows is the gift of a "new heart" as well as a character who sacrifices his life so that Tony might live.
In Ezekiel 36:26, we are promised, "I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts." Iron Man is about ongoing conversion.

WHERE WAS I?
Wow, that hasn’t happened in like . . . forever. Today’s blog entries were posted at 1:30. . . not because I was sleeping, busy, sick, or overwhelmingly distracted. I just forgot! Sorry about that!
WHERE ARE THEY?
Father John Cusick, director of young adult ministry for the Archdiocese of Chicago and the father of the Theology on Tap program, said the church needs a savvy "new apologetics" and "satellite sites" away from the parish grounds where young adults can gather to form quality relationships without feeling pressure from the church. Cusick cited a recent USA Today poll indicating that 10 percent of Americans are former Catholics and said the percentage is much higher among people in their 20s and early 30s. "If Catholic youth ministry is so good, where are all the young adults? They’re missing in action," he said. "For the moment (in their teens), they have a good sense of church, but then they fall off the end of the table." For more, read here

BETTER THAN YOU
THINK YOU ARE
From Britain’s Got Talent comes the one line that every youth minister needs to practice over and over. It comes from (of all people) Simon Cowell who has but a reputation of being a quick critic of the pitch-y or boring. Yet, it is Simon who tells young, nervous Andrew, "I think you’re better than you think you are. . . but, hear it from me, you are good."

LIBERAL AMERICAN CATHOLICISM – - OVER??
Time on-line reports that Pope Benedict may have dealt a knockout blow to the liberal American Catholicism

COOL, MAN, REAL, COOL
Baltimore’s Archbishop O’Brien writes about his suspicions "that the frenzied greeting the Holy Father received from the overflow turnout at St. Joseph’s Seminary had much to do with the fact that he was there to preach to young people about Jesus – as he has done all his life. The Pope challenged them: “Christ’s light beckons you to be guiding stars for others, walking Christ’s way of forgiveness, reconciliation, humility, joy and peace.” Read it all here
THE HISTORY OF CATHOLIC-JEWISH RELATIONS (HUMOR)
Centuries ago, the pope decreed that Jews in Italy had to convert or leave. There was an outcry from the Jewish community, so the pope offered a deal: He would have a religious debate with the leader of the Jewish community. If the Jews won, they could stay in Italy. If the pope won, they would have to convert or leave.
The Jewish people picked an aged, wise rabbi to represent them in the debate. However, as the rabbi spoke no Italian, and the pope spoke no Yiddish, they agreed that it would be a ’silent’ debate.
On the chosen day the pope and rabbi sat opposite each other.
The pope raised three fingers. The rabbi looked back and raised one finger.
Next, the pope waved his finger around his head. The rabbi pointed to the ground where he sat.
The pope brought out a communion wafer and a chalice of wine. The rabbi pulled out an apple.
With that the pope stood and declared that he was beaten. The rabbi was too clever. The Jews could stay.
Later the cardinals met with the pope and asked him what had happened.
The pope said, "First I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity. He responded by holding up one finger to remind me there is still only one God common to both our beliefs. Then, I waved my finger around my head to show him that God was all around us. He responded by pointing to the ground to show that God was also right here with us. I pulled out the wine and water, to show that God absolves us of all our sins. He pulled out an apple to remind me of the original sin. He had beaten me at every move and I could not continue."
Meanwhile, the Jewish community gathered to ask the rabbi how he had won.
"I haven’t a clue," said the rabbi. "First, he said to me that we had three days to get out of Italy, so I gave him the finger. Then he tells me that the whole country would be cleared of Jews and I said to him that we were staying right here."
"And then what?" asked a woman.
"Who knows?" said the Rabbi. "He took out his lunch, so I took out mine."

FEATHER ON THE BREATH OF GOD
Remembering, of course, that we who serve in youth ministry must absolutely also serve as catechists . . . listen to the closing comments from Gerald Baumbach as he received an award from NCCL:
The last scene in the movie Forrest Gump captures the movement of a feather carried skyward by the wind. I like to think of this image as a reminder of the 12th century mystic Hildegard of Bingen’s own self-reflection as what is commonly described as “a feather on the breath of God.”
May we have the wisdom and the courage to be moved by the breath of God, not floating aimlessly beyond or above reality, but intentionally embracing the movement of life, one community with many gifts, rich in common witness to the living and dynamic faith we profess. We do this motivated by the ongoing transformation of catechetical opportunities for all of life within a culturally rich Church more diverse than yesterday and less diverse than tomorrow, and remembering that, in the words of the NDC, “the incarnation of the only Son of God is the original inculturation of God’s word” (21).
And so I propose an end to the immobilizing sentences, “I am only a catechetical leader” or “I am just a catechist.” No, never say just, never say only! A catechetical leader carries gospel and life, faith and sustenance. A catechist is never “just anything,” but like Hildegard, is “a feather on the breath of God.”
Carry forward the word, be responsive to the call and breath of the Holy Spirit, and remain confident and secure for the journey. After all, you just might end up in Emmaus. Our eyes are opened now, our burning hearts afire in the Son, made known to us “in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:35). We aptly recall from today’s Gospel one of Jesus’ “I am” statements: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst” (John 6:35).

BIO: Lisa is the Public Relations and Trade Store Coordinator at World Library Publications. Lisa started playing flute at age nine, and she continued to play and study music all of her life. She is an instrumentalist for St. Anne Catholic Church in Barrington, IL under the direction of Rory Cooney. See more here.
QUOTE TO NOTE: (as a parent) Staying connected with where I was (in high school), where they are, where kids are today is really important because their world is hard. (My faith experiences) helped me navigate through the world and I am blessed for having that in my life. With my own kids and their friends and our house being “party central”, I enjoy that because I know that their are in a good place and I can help them through what they are going through. . .
Discipleship is knowing the grace, knowing the forgiveness, knowing the healing, and knowing the joy of being a follower of Christ and living the Kingdom in our own life.
OBSCURE FACTOID: As a parent, Lisa views herself as a model of discipleship for her young people. What is we began all our parent meeting with that concept, that statement, that belief? How much would it change the things we say and do?
BEHIND THE SCENES: After a long while of face-to-face interviews, this was a taped phone interview conducted from the recesses of our exile in “cubicle city.” My voice is lower as to not disturb my co-workers.
BLOG REFLECTION: can be read here for May 7th.
