That’s So Gay

Recently, we commemorated the tenth anniversary of Matthew Shepherd’s Murder.

Today, almost 90% of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students report being verbally harassed at school because of their sexual orientation. LGBT teens experience homophobic remarks and harassment throughout the school day, creating an atmosphere where they feel disrespected, unwanted and unsafe. Homophobic remarks such as that’s so gay are the most commonly heard; these slurs are often unintentional and a common part of teens vernacular.

In this video, Wanda Syles wonder why the slam is not "that’s so sixteen-year-old boy with a cheesy moustache."  In other public service ads from the same campaign, the Hillary Duff  intervention is "that’s so girl wearing a skirt as a top" and then one must also consider "that’s so Emma and Julia."

When we hear "That’s so Gay" from a kid, we should speak up!  (More regarding that here.) They are, after all, Always Our Children.

UPDATE: I do not blindly place hyperlinks on this site. The above five have been previewed.  When this entry was originally posted, I actually embedded the Wanda Sykes youtube.  As with most youtube postings nowadays, when the video is over, seven more "related" videos are then made available.  Unfortunately, not all of those were previewed, nor can I control how youtube randomly selects them.  Therefore, I have removed the embedded video as not to provide links directly from this site to objectionable material or content in conflict with the church.  I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, "That’s so Emma and Julia," but your readership and the integrity of this site are a value to me.

  1. just wanted to thank you for posting that, and for affirming the notion that the language our teens use isn’t always loving, or even acceptable! i’ve been working on this phrase for a long time, and even used to charge for the misuse of the words gay or retarded in my classroom. .50 cents a pop! :) anyway, thanks for posting this- it’s important. peace and prayers!

  2. We had Tammy Amosson here yesterday in Balto and she was going after the same message regarding retarded. (see http://www.dscottmiller.com/2007/08/15/tammy-amosson-is-inside-the-youth-ministers-studio/) I’ll post on that soon!
