Taking faith to the streets . . . I always find it intriguing to mix a traditional prayer practice, in this case Stations of the Cross, with sharing social justice oriented messages. 

SAN ANTONIO, TX — About 75 participants, the majority college students, walked eight blocks downtown from Milam Park to San Fernando Cathedral in support of the Lenten Walk for Justice April 3. Sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Antonio, religious organizations from around the city went through 15 Stations of the Cross. Each group was assigned a social issue and station where they presented their topic with a summary, a skit or a prayer. Marcos Martinez, youth and young adult program coordinator of the Catholic Relief Center of San Antonio, supported the issue of fair trade at Station 15. Read more here.

And then there is taking faith to the internet highways and byways streets . . .

SIOUX CITY, IA — Brandon Harvey, youth minister at St. Michael’s parish in Sioux City, uses Facebook to advertise the area’s LifeTeen group. With so many announcements at Mass and in bulletins, it can be difficult for the right information to reach the kids. “The parents would have the information down, but the kids wouldn’t,” Harvey said. “They’d have no concept of it. It seemed as if for a lot of the kids if the parents knew first, they didn’t want to take any ownership over it or have anything to do with it.”  Read more here.  Meanwhile, for more regarding social networking, see the immediate post below.

Because it is always surprising where you’ll find your kids . . .

ANNAPOLIS, MD — At Our Lady of the Chesapeake, Alyssa Degreenia is a peer minister and helps lead the Sunday evening youth and Wednesday evening young adult meetings at the Pasadena church. A member of the church’s teen council, she organizes youth retreats and overnights, and assists with group projects at Sarah’s Hope Outreach Center in Baltimore.
