caffeineIt was a question that begged an answer, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” Yet, it first received another question, “Hey, really, are you the only one who didn’t get what’s been going on back there in Jerusalem?” But, the first Questioner was persistent, “What’s been going on?”

Well, they had already been talking about this, but now the Stranger wanted to know.  They probably could not constrain themselves, they blathered on about Jesus the Nazarene, his teachings, his wonder workings, how they felt closer to God when they were with One who seemed so intimate with the deity that He called “Abba.” and… and… and… how it all went sour so quickly in these last days – - – arrest, the criminal’s death march, crucifixion.  It all came out as they walked along with one another.

Sadness, confusion, uncertainty. And , now, days later, some of the woman folk (C’mon, man… woman folk!) and telling stories of angels and alleged resurrections. It’s all TOO MUCH.  We had to get out of Jerusalem, this road to Emmaus was the first way we could find outta there.

The walk continued, but the Stranger stopped.  The two were so engaged, it took a few steps before they realized that they had momentarily lost their Traveling Companion. They turned to see what had happened and were stunned at the response. They were sickened by the response.   There worlds were turned upside-down emmausthreeby the response.   They were embarrassed by the response.

When he turned toward them, they saw that His eyes had watered. It was quiet, yet rung in their ears.  “What’s been going on? Are you foolish?  Don’t you get it — everything that the prophets spoke?  Was not everything that occurred to the Messiah foretold?

He has asked “What’s been going on?” and now answered His very own question reminding them of their own lived experience as well as the faith of their fathers, beginning with Moses and all the prophets. (Luke 24: 17- 27)
