Take a Stand

When the ArchBalt’s Archbishop Edwin O’Brien offers a Confirmation homily, he encourages young people to “Take a Stand” for the faith

Which brings back my memory to this scene from Dead Poets Society.

The original lesson of John Keating to stand upon a desk was to gain a different perspective within the classroom. As a teacher, there was no greater lesson that he could teach.

In Catholic Youth Ministry, we talk of offering young people a “worthy adventure.” and surely moments like this scene are the character-definers of young disciples.

As youth ministers, there was no greater lesson that we might offer.

  1. “Oh Captain, my Captain” I think if I were in Keating’s class that I, like Mr. Pitts, would have been deemed as having a “rather unfortunate name.”

  2. Great video clip. The mark of effective ministry is to have teens take a stand for Christ as Keating’s students took a stand for him.
