UNO

Here’s a report from the groups regarding their “sending” from their parishes and images of our first day.

Monday afternoon groups either toured or siesta-ed in the afternoon while Georgina and I went to WYD HQ for backpacks, credentials, etc.

We dinner-ed in the evening and then hit the sack.  I slept for probably eleven hours!

News from Around:

As World Youth Day officially kicks off today, let’s consider the “impact” of this gathering

ABILENE, TX –  Bishop Michael Pfeifer of the Diocese of San Angelo remembers being in Rome in 2000 for World Youth Day and "looking out at the huge crowd on a Saturday evening," Pfeifer recently recalled of the largest World Youth Day he attended. "There was just a mass of people for probably two miles. (I thought), ‘Out there, there’s future presidents, future prime ministers, might be a future pope, statesmen, whatever.’ More from the Aberline Reporter News

VATICAN CITY – -"Young people can find themselves in a lot of local churches on the margin of things, with a lot of people who don’t speak their language, who treat them as if they just descended from Mars," said Archbishop Joseph W. Tobin, secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

For many young Catholics, World Youth Day can be the one church event where they have the time, space and camaraderie they need to start pondering the way God wants them to live their faith. More from the Catholic News Service

ROME, ITALY — The head of Madrid’s Housing and Economy Office, Percival Manglano, confirmed Aug. 2 that World Youth Day is expected to bring $143 million into the Spanish economy.  More from Catholic News Agency.

News from ‘Round Here:

Sunday was a wasted day… after fourteen days straight on, it was good to take a day off (but for one office errand), even if I had a headache most of it.  Clark returned late at night

I was out of the office as I attended a memorial service celebrating the life of the father of a colleague and friend. Tuesday started with four meetings before 1:30, never a good thing.  It was, however, nice to have the whole dyyam staff together again.

More desk time Wednesday and then a run to the PX before the army son leaves town.

Thursday was my last day in the office before departure to Madrid.  An e-newsletter went out, a facebook posting on our young adult page went up, and our office intern and I went out for a farewell lunch.  In the evening, Clark and a friend and I played some cribbage, a card game of my family. Friday was another building closed day in the summer.  Took the opportunity to store up some blog posts for my return and into September, began packing for Madrid and had a lovely lunch with the family.

BLOG ADVISORY:  There will be no news posting next week as we will be wrapping up WYD coverage.

Hola

Greetings from Madrid

We arrive in Paris this morning around 5am and landed in Madrid around 9:30.

Our delegation is tired and weary after some touring this morning.  A siesta and shower and we should be good to go for a dinner tonight.

All is well… Should have video and pictures tomorrow.  Matt Palmer has a report up as well.

Firm In the Faith

BANNER_300x250

The World Youth Day theme is Planted and Built Up in Jesus, Firm in the Faith

We seek to be firm in firm in faith, but as our flights leave the states today, you can fully expect us to be all sorts of wobbly on any sort of schedule of blog postings…

We beg for your patience during this time as well as your prayers for all the pilgrims.

Reconsidering Joy

Joy, humor, and laughter are under-appreciated values in the spiritual life and are needed, not only in our personal spiritual lives, but in the life of the Catholic Church.

Fr. Jim Martin offered the Ignatian Lecture locally recently and I was out in anticipation of his keynote next March for the MidAtlantic Congress

The video was shot by the Catholic Review’s George Matysek, Jr…. If you want to talk joy, you shoulda seen George and his colleague Matt Palmer hanging out / interviewing Martin afterwards.  It wasn’t the celebrity factor, it was the collegiality of “fellow Catholic journalists” (Martin’s generous words) with the associate editor of America magazine that they guys were geekin’ out over… Their joy was palpable!

Anyone truly in touch with God is joyful!

Seek joy in your life and ministry.

We Are The Sum

187008_100000040481990_181489_n We are not the sum
of our weaknesses and failures;

We are the sum
of the Father’s love for us
and
our real capacity
to become the image of his Son.

Spiritual Warfare

sword Don’t you wonder if “spiritual warfare” is misunderstood?

I’ve always been uncomfortable with this language. There is often talk about being out “to the test,” experiencing “battle against demons,” and, in the process, demonizing the works or words of others. Sometimes, you can look at the situation and clearly see the mis-step made by the spiritual warrior that engaged them into their own sense of embattlement.

Too often, it seems as if spiritual warfare is more about I, I, I than Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Is not the battle actually between the Lord and the demons of the world?  Our challenge is in declaring “which side” we will be engaged. I believe that we are called more towards trusting in the Good Shepherd rather than striking out  afield against demons.

When it comes to spiritual warfare, I have declared pacifism and wish the same for you.  May the peace of Christ be with you.

Oh, Lord, It’s Hard to Be

Among my cohorts, we have a phrase about extroverts who can not withhold from chiming in on any topic no matter if it is evangelization to priest pedophiles to car wax…

They can not avoid “swinging at every pitch.”

Part of this is related to their own insecure needs to be significant, but often that is masked by the perception of (ill-deserved) arrogance.

And here’s the challenge: is it about you or is it about others?  Humility is the ability to hold your power for the good of others and not personal gain.

Humility is just common-sense. If you are an expert in one area, you should recognize that there is a great depth of information in other area’s where you are not an expert.

You just don’t need to swing at every pitch. Listening and nodding works well.

News from Around:

More World Youth Day news and some of the “secrets” of these gatherings…

Pope Benedict XVI has put his own stamp on the church’s celebration of World Youth Day, and it’s especially clear in the gathering’s moments of prayer. In Cologne, Germany, six years ago he surprised the youth at the Saturday night vigil by urging them to quiet down.

The Cologne event was where he started a major new WYD tradition: Instead of ending the vigil with a boisterous musical finale, he ended it with eucharistic adoration.

The Pope seems surprised that “these youth days have actually turned out to be a genuine gift for me.” He has been struck by the “intense joy” and “the spirit of recollection that, amazingly, pervades the actual World Youth Days themselves.” “It was quite simply the common joy of faith that carried us through and that made it possible for hundreds of thousands of people to remain in silence before the sacrament and so to become one.”

RIO DE JANERIO, BRAZIL — Pope Benedict XVI will travel to Rio de Janeiro in 2013, when World Youth Day (WYD) is held there, the city’s mayor has announced.  “We will make it official in middle August,” Rio’s Mayor Eduardo Paes announced on August 1.

During this pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI has scheduled international WYD celebrations every 3 years—lengthening the 2-year intervals that had prevailed under Blessed John Paul II. Plans for WYD in Brazil were reportedly moved forward, however, to avoid a conflict with the World Cup, which Brazil will host in 2014  Read more from the Portuguese American Journal

News from ‘Round Here:

Last Sunday brought the World Youth Day delegation meeting.  It was exciting to discuss the details as well as the dreams of Madrid.

Tuesday has me actually arrive in a little bit later than usual (still before 9am – still very early for many youth ministry types) and a meeting with our child protection offices as we prepare details for a September training.  There was also a meal and a meeting related to the Mid-Atlantic Congress for next March.

Wednesday found me on Relevant Radio, offering a brief overview of our offices to New School Principals, and sending out a draft “direction statement” to our youth ministry contacts… all before 9:30am.  The day settled down with a run to the retreat house to pack-out High-LI supplies and an office visit from a just engaged youth minister.

Thursday was not the day I expected and can’t even talk about. Out of the office son Clark and I went to see Cowboys & Aliens and went out for dinner for some storytelling- so a good finish.

Clark was out early Friday for a weekend family visit, so the morning started with an early airport run, The rest of the day involved a run through the parishes of central Maryland, interrupted with a webinar on the Youth Rally and March for Life in a great little coffee house.  Had nice brief visits with four youth ministers which made for a great day!

Saturday was spent powering through a touch of flu while engaging in a young adult training in English and en Español.  We were blessed with more than we expected so the day involved a quick catering run as well.  Getting home in the afternoon, I immediately spent the remainder  of the weekend in and out of sleep.
