I like the list proposed in the article. It is missing a few things, but a great start. I love Cardinal Dolan!.

I am frustrated however when I hear people talk about the poor catechesis of the past two or three generations(read the article). What are they comparing it to? Formal catechesis outside of seminary has only been around about that long sans sacramental prep.

Before V2 we had a strong cultural Catholicity that has dissolved over the last few generations. It was in this culture that Catholics naturally absorbed catechetical points. However from reading first hand accounts of preV2 Catholic, and talking to a lot of them, I do not feel that they understood or understand their faith any better than post V2. V2 was needed, desperately, but I often wonder if what we learned from the process is equally met with a number of things we lost.

I want both, and. We need strong Cultural Catholicism to form a solid Catechetical floor, and vibrant formational ministries to help build up from there.

I feel like we have missed something as "little c church". One of my good friend pointed it out to me when discussing this article in some very clear terms.

"Catechesis is a moment IN Evangelization", he quoted. I feel like we always forget this. Let's help people fall in love with Christ again. Let us start with ourselves, I think.

I have always thought that memorization should be incorporated into any educational setting. I personally felt lacking in my faith because I never had to memorize anything beyond the Our Father. Where I may disagree is on the methodology of memorization as well as some of the "needs to knows.". What about the Trinity, the Incarnation, original sin, grace, and the basic Gospel message? Watching this unfold will be fun!
