Morning After

43kidinstormLet’s talk about prepping for the worst case scenario…

Before the worst of the Hurricane Sandy storm had hit, there was standard rainy day activities… movies, baking, and cleaning… The cleaning had an additional purpose.

Everything was battened down in the place. Not because I was worried about blowing away, but because I was reasonably confident that the lights were going to go out… In the past fourteen months, I have probably spent about eight or so days without lights because of storms.

So I cleaned so that there would be no bumping into the night causing any damage to self or property. The escape was ready for the dark. Candles were strategically placed in rooms with books of matches adjacent. Bags were placed next to the door for the morning if power went out. The heat was turned slightly up to sustain warmth in the place in case the power went out as well. The phone was plugged in to ensure a full power up.

The worst of the storm was forecasted for a six hour period last night.  Ninety minutes in, the lights flickered for about a minute. “All right, here we go,” I thought. And then… Well, I’ve been blessed to have had power remain throughout the night. 20% of my zip code is out, but I’m typing this on-line with the computer and internet all plugged in.

Lesson learned: There are no regrets the morning after in being prepared to not go bump in the night.

I am lucky and feel blessed.  God bless all those who are having a rougher morning.
