Friends,
I need your help. Over the next weeks, you will find postings which will excerpt a small book that was drafted over the summer. Your suggestions, feedback, affirmations, and outright disagreement (so… comment away!) will all be greatly valued as together we might form an understanding of the sensus fidei of the field of Youth Ministry regarding where we should be going in the future.
These posts will always be designated with this cover shot on the right and found in the caffeine category if you want to read them in order.) Here’s a abstract regarding what you will see:
Spiritual Homelessness is becoming epidemic in today’s culture. For us to confront it, the
Church must change her paradigms about how we best minister with young people. Taking
another look at the Parable of the Lost Son, we can gain insights about what (or who) all is
needed to help the next generation discover a sense of home in their Church.

I agree whole heartedly that we need to change our paradigm for ministry. But it’s not just about how we minister to the young. It’s about how we minister to the entire parish community. Parents, seniors, children, youth, young adults, everyone. I don’t think we can effectively minister to youth without effectively ministering to all in the parish. Lessons are caught, not taught. Who are they caught from? The parish community. I think we do a disservice to our youth if we think we need to just evangelize them the right way. It won’t work by itself. Those are my two cents.
