   BIO:  Don has served as the director for the diocesan Office of Youth Ministry in the Springfield, MA for ten years. He served for 9 years as a parish Coordinator of Youth Ministry in Des Moines, IA, and for 10 years as Director of the Office for Youth Ministries at the St. Joseph Educational Center in West Des Moines, IA. Since 1985, Don has served as adjunct faculty in youth leadership and adult formation/training for the Center for Ministry Development. More bio can be found here.
   QUOTE TO NOTE:  There is such a tradition of doing things a certain way that to begin to talk about expanding vision, adjusting a vision, or even acquiring a new vision is a tough obstacle to face.  People know, in their hearts, that many of the things that they are doing, most of the things they are doing, are not getting the desired results with young people.  They have a need to change.  They want to change. But, at the same time their solution to change is 'Maybe, we just need to do some of these things that we have been doing forever more intensely.' rather than looking at new models and new ways to do it.
   OBSCURE FACTOID:  Don and I had worked together back in Iowa.

   BIO:  Specializing John is director of campus ministry at Central Connecticut State University and at Trinity College for the Archdiocese of Hartford, CT.  He is the former diocesan director of youth ministry in Bridgeport.
   QUOTE TO NOTE:  (College students, like all of us,) need to stop - a little bit; pray - a little bit; and ask that in this that has happened to me, what does it mean, what is God trying to tell me. . . where is God leading me through this experience?
   OBSCURE FACTOID:  I have two strong memories of many in my long friendship with John: (1) My memories of 9/11 will always include my last pre-9/11 moment that occurred in a phone call that morning with John discussing the merits of our home football teams.  (2) Then there was the early morning at World Youth Day in Cologne where John and I tripped across each other among the 800,000 overnight campers in Marienfeld and walked for a cup of coffee.
   BEHIND THE SCENES: At Little Rock, I was able to stockpile some interviews and this is one of them.  It was a little disconcerting to hear a birthday greeting three months later

ROZANSKI: Help to encourage me as a bishop to say that out faith is alive, our faith is young, and that our faith is being spread in a wonderful and being lived in the lives of our young people.
MADDEN: (Young peoples’) level of commitment to the church, to the parish, and to the community in their service projects is really astounding.
MALOOLY: If you get nothing else out of the program and out of the reception of the sacrament other than to develop a lifetime habit of service, I’ll go away happy.  To me, when you serve the needs of others, you best imitate what Jesus did day-in and day-out.

   QUOTE TO NOTE:  If I am made for the gift of self, then discipleship is helping one recover this ability for gift of self because what sin has done has ruptured our ability of give ourselves away in love, rupture our ability to sacrifice.  Discipleship helps us integrate body and spirit, leading us to true freedom.  Freedom is the ability to choose the good.
   OBSCURE FACTOID:  Katrina is our second weary interview at the end of a long day.  Her day started at Martha's Vineyard before finishing her presentation in Frederick.  We were among the last to walk out.
   BEHIND THE SCENES: So there was this guy whistling in the background at the very beginning and I would have never starting recording had I heard that in the background. . . I am continually learning about podcasting on the fly!

 MATT MAHER

   BIO:  To immediately attach Matt to Your Grace in Enough is probably both appropriate and unfair.  As composer, you understand the talent within Matt as can also find in his soon to be released CD, Empty and Beautiful. But, his experiences with LifeTeen and as a worship leader and concert performer throughout the world lead one to discover that God has more than enough graced the person of Matt.    QUOTE TO NOTE:  Ministry is more and more and more about being a disciple. And it is not so much about the gifts and talents that you have as much as it is about pursuing God whole-heartedly. Real ministry comes out of that relationship. . . Ultimately, what inspires you in moments as a ministry is really this union, this relationship with God.
   OBSCURE FACTOID:  I'm the sort of person who watches how the other actors react during a long monologue/  My attention is often distracted to watch the band when they are off- this is what I had blogged the morning after the concert. . . The picture is posted to the left, not in praise to Matt, but his band. There is an awesome, gentle, competent brand of servant going on there amongst these guys.

 TOM BOOTH

   BIO:  An incredibly gifted composer and musician, Tom has written songs that are known throughout the country. He has collaborated with many popular Christian artists, including Kathy Troccoli, Rich Mullins and Amy Grant. Both his solo projects and his collaborations have garnered numerous Dove, Unity and Grammy awards and nominations. Tom has composed and performed songs for Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II. Among those he counts as partners in ministry are LIFETEEN, The Franciscan University at Steubenville, the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM), and John Michael Talbot and the Brothers and Sisters of Charity. He has served as music director for the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC).
   QUOTE TO NOTE:  Songs are (not unlike) many catechisms. (For better or for worse) they carry with them their own theology, a sense of “who is God,” “who are we,” “what is prayer” We need to be more bold, more intentional. And not just kinda “sing songs”, but really have an intentionality, like in prayer . . . your intention is (to be) always Jesus Christ.
   OBSCURE FACTOID:  Life of rock stars? Totally un-glamorous! Both Tom and Matt Maher and band arrived late the Friday night before the concert, spent the day offering workshops, did the concert, were leaving to some motel somewhere with a 3am "spring forward" daylight savings time induced departure the next morning before another performance Sunday evening.
   BEHIND THE SCENES: There is a half-minute segment that was edited out as Tom and I held a deep and lasting discussion about the merits of this spiritual aid.

GEORGINA VACA

  BIO:  Georgina is the coordinator of Hispanic Young Adult and Youth Ministry for the Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  A graduate of Seton Hall, Georgina is in her third in the Archdiocese. She is presently enrolled at the Eccumenical Institute.  Georgina was an Encuentro leader locally and a participant nationally.  She serves on the True Love Waits task group for the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry.
  QUOTE TO NOTE:  Discipleship requires, for me, a deepening in my relationship with the Lord and having him "all up in my business." in every single aspect of my life. And I don't put him aside in a box when I'm out with friends at a coffeeshop. Nope, He's right there.
  OBSCURE FACTOID:  Yes, Georgina is, by her own admission, a dancer. On the closing night of the NFCYM's annual membership meeting in Little Rock last month, a dance party broke out in the hotel lobby. Georgina could be found right in the middle of it . . . and the Lord was praised,

DR. EDWARD HAHNENBERG

  BIO:  Dr. Edward P. Hahnenberg is assistant professor of theology at Xavier University (where he teaches in the areas of theological foundations, ecclesiology, liturgy, and sacraments. He received his Ph.D. in theology from the University of Notre Dame in 2002. Dr. Hahnenberg served as consultant to the U.S. Bishops' Subcommittee on Lay Ministry in its preparation of the recent document Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord: A Resource for Guiding the Development of Lay Ecclesial Ministry. He is the author of two books--Ministries: A Relational Approach and A Concise Guide to the Documents of Vatican II
  QUOTE TO NOTE:  We as a Church, in 2,000 years, have tried to figure out what discipleship means to follow Christ. I don’t think we figure it out. I think we are working on it, always working on it. Discipleship is a life of love lived in imitation of Jesus. It is to love like Jesus loved and live like Jesus loved.
  OBSCURE FACTOID:  Edward came to the attention of many when he presented at the Lay Ministry Symposium in Collegeville, an event we previously discussed with Charlotte McCorquodale and Jeff Kaster.
  BEHIND THE SCENES: As stated this was taped after a Co-Workers gathering in my home diocese.  I'm beginning to always carry the digital recorded and more boldly invite folks into the studio.  Edward was generous - -  he didn't know of the site or the podcast but agreed anyway.

ANSEL AUGUSTINE

  BIO:  Ansel J. Augustine, MPS presently works as the coordinator for Black Youth & Young Adult Ministry in the Archdiocese of New Orleans.  He also works with the Campus Ministry at Xavier University of Louisiana.  He worked in youth ministry for six years at his home church, St. Peter Claver Church in New Orleans, LA.  Ansel received his Master’s Degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University of New Orleans, and his Certificate in Youth Ministry from Xavier University of Louisiana’s Institute for Black Catholic Studies. He is also on the Faculty for the Institute for Black Catholic Studies.  Ansel has also published various articles related to ministry and has done various workshops, conferences, and retreats around the country. BRIAN JOHNSON

  BIO:  Brian Keith Johnson currently serves as the director of the Office of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Galveston-Houston. Brian has previously served as the coordinator of youth ministry at the parishes of St. Cecilia and St. Gregory the Great in Baltimore. Over the years, he has been a national and international keynote speaker, workshop presenter, retreat master and revivalist. He facilitated World Youth Day Catechetical Sessions at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado (1993), was one of two representatives from the United States to participate in the International Youth Forum in Manila, Philippines (January 5-10, 1995), and was a keynote presenter for the National Black Catholic Congress in Baltimore (1997), and the National Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry in Pittsburgh (2004).
  QUOTE TO NOTE:  (describing adolescent discipleship) Young people are on fire for their faith, in love with their church, even in the midst of struggle, in the midst of controversies. They are centered, their faith is centered is being Christ-like to other, sharing their compassion, love, concern for the well-being and the faith-life of others. To be disciples, they are mimicking Christ. And in mimicking Christ, not only are they becoming disciples, but hopefully, like Christ, they are calling forth disciples.
  OBSCURE FACTOID:  One of my favorite Brian Johnson moments was when he took the National Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry stage in Pittsburgh, and, in song, word, and presentation encouraged the field.  It was wonderful to hear that it was a favorite moment for Brian as well.
  BEHIND THE SCENES: A session at the NFCYM meeting in Little Rock had just broken up and Brian and I sat down in the midst of the crowd-- therefore the background noise.

  OBSCURE FACTOID:  Chris and I have swapped e-mails off and I throughout the past year or so.  He has helped to make the web-site more interactive (for me); a functionality that I would hope to bring (with Chris' explicit encouragement) to the site for you.
  BEHIND THE SCENES: The interview had quite the set of starts and stops.  We both took turns sidetracking the conversation and there was at least one solid interruption in the cubicle during taping.  Still working on equalizing voice levels.

Scott Miller is the coordinator for adolescent faith formation for the Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  His responsibilities include the areas of adolescent catechesis and confirmation. With over thirty years of youth ministry experience on the parish and diocesan levels, Scott previously served on the staff of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, Inc as director of membership services. His responsibilities there included management of all aspects of the  National Conferences on Catholic Youth Ministry (2000-2004) and the New Diocesan Directors' Institute He maintains a daily web-blog at www.catholicYMblog.com as well as offers week podcasts interviews with youth ministry characters "Inside the Youth Ministers' Studio" at www.insideYMstudio.com.   Scott is the proud father of Nichole, 22, Clark, 21, and Meghan, 16.
  QUOTE TO NOTE: (what have you learned in providing this auxiliary service of the web site?) There is a virtual community that is gathered around the web site. And I have been blessed to be a minister in service to this virtual community.  I get these funny, great, lovely, encouraging e-mails from different folks thanking me for the service, making suggestions, telling which way I should go, and correcting my spelling errors. . . I never understood virtual communities or social networking until this experience.  Web sites like this are a means by which we can gather folks into learning communities. . . It's all full of possibilities.
  OBSCURE FACTOID:  I started podcasting and posting on Wednesdays for a few specific reasons.  Wednesday seemed to be a good point in the middle of the week.  It allowed me a few days after the weekend if a special guest came into town and recorded an interview.  AND, I knew my 50th birthday wuld be on a Wednesday, and that this might be a gift to myself.  I truly appreciated Mike Patin in playing along.
  BEHIND THE SCENES: The interview does have a format of questions which each interviewee gets in advance.  There is, however, the intention of a conversation and sometimes other questions pop up.  Mike attempted to give me one or two of his off-format questions in advance, but I didn't want them- trying to take the interviewee role as every other previous "quest" experiences them

LEE NAGEL

  BIO:  A faith filled storyteller, Leland Nagel has held a variety of positions on both the diocesan and university level. He served for 15 years as director of Total Catholic Education for the Diocese of Green Bay. He recently began his latest role as the executive director of National Conference of Catechetical Leaders (NCCL). Lee Nagel is an educator by profession, a catechist by vocation, a teacher by trade, and an evangelist by Baptism.
  QUOTE TO NOTE: (on the future:) We are becoming far less compartmentalized. The National Directory has this wonderful line about that we should not be in water-tight compartments. (Long before Hillary Clinton talked about the “whole village”), we, as a church, believed and understood that in terms of our Rite of Christian Initiation.  But, I think that sense is coming back, whether it would be that we are going to be more intergenerational.
  OBSCURE FACTOID:  Regarding the 1982 New Orleans NCCYM (and NO, really, no one wants to know how old or unborn you were back then...) The whole conference pretty much stayed at this one hotel.  The whole conference pretty much hit Bourbon Street hard on the last night.  The whole conference had a moment of confusion, however, when they returned late at night as the hotel's lobby had been redecorated for Christmas in our absence.  
  BEHIND THE SCENES: Still working on the transfer of the digital recording from my recorder to my editor.  There is a buzz in the background that gets picked up in the transfer.

ROBERT FEDUCCIA

  BIO:  Robert Feduccia Jr. founded the Youth Liturgical Leadership Program at Saint Meinrad School of Theology. Through his work as a parish youth minister, his leadership of liturgical conferences for youth, and internships for college students, he has invited young people into relationship with the Lord and the Church through liturgical prayer. Robert is now the general manager for spiritandsong.com, a division of OCP, and he continues to realize his passion of drawing people into a relationship with God through prayer and worship.
  QUOTE TO NOTE: (On discipleship: ) A great spiritual writer said that being holy is really something that is very easy.  He talks about the sacrament of the moment – living in the moment and being fully aware and sating “yes” to the right thing; doing the right thing just in every moment.

VALLIMAR JANSEN

  BIO:  ValLimar has a long history of singing sacred music, starting from the age of five. She received most of her training in music and performance from Howard University in Washington, D.C. She has sung and toured professionally throughout the United States, Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium and Japan. She played the role of Beneatha with the Broadway touring cast in the European premier of Raisin. She went on to co-author a one-woman musical about the life of Ethel Waters that received a special commendation from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.  She has keynoted and led prayer and song at many liturgical and pastoral conferences, including NCYC.
  QUOTES TO NOTE::: How can I today create disciples? It’s going to change the way I behave. It’s going to change the way I think. It’s going to change what I do at work, It’s going to dictate to me how my life is lived on a 24/7 basis.
