Each Wednesday, another guest will step Inside the Youth Minister's Studio.  This experience is designed to document both where we have been been as well as where we are going as a profession and a field.
Thanks for being a part of this.  Pass the word along to others.

TERRI TELEPAK
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 9:58 minutes and is 9.35mb, taped 02/23/07)
BIO: Terri is a Pastoral Associate at
Saint Raphael Parish, in Bay Village, Ohio. (Diocese of Cleveland) She has years of experience, having previously served as a diocesan director of youth ministry in Greensburg, PA.  For over ten years, she served on the USCCB Committee on Catechesis.
QUOTE TO NOTE:  I think a big part of Goal One of Renewing the Vision (which is “to empower young people to live as disciples) is a social justice or service outreach where we become Christ for others.  You actually put on the towel and wash the feet of your friends. We do that by performing the corporal works of mercy by feeding the hungry and clothing the naked. . . The goal is equipping our young people to be able to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
OBSCURE FACTOID:  Terri was, is, and will continue to be one of the leading voices in our church regarding adolescent catechesis.
BEHIND THE SCENES:  Wooo Hooo.  A Tuesday night edit and an advance screening for the subject.  What a novel concept was this intended concept!  Terri answered the first question for probably about an additional 90 seconds, but it was edited for time constraints.  That is why the question came up as to how she spends the rest of her week.

ANNE MARIE CRIBBIN
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 10:22 minutes and is 9.72mb, taped 02/23/07)
BIO: Anne Marie is the parish youth minister at
St. Jane Frances de Chantal in Bethesda, Maryland.  She, along with her comedic partner Justin, form Over the Top Ministries. Anne Marie has been active for years with the summer Encounter the Gospel of Life program as well. Cribbs blogs regularly here.
  QUOTE TO NOTE:

Anne Marie described that her job description includes being sparkly and luminous. "I wear glitter daily," she suggested.  "I think the sparkly and luminous is part of just the joy that comes with youth ministry. I think that it is a definite job requirement... that there is a love and passion for (our ministry) and it comes out in the joy that we have for the work.
OBSCURE FACTOID:  Anne Marie and Justin from Over the Top gave me my longest and hardest laugh (with tears) at the NCCYM in Denver. Read the blog.
BEHIND THE SCENES:  My Wednesday mornings with last minute editing continue to be a mess. Sigh, again!  Really pleased with the sound quality on this one (except for a little mic movement under a story of Anne Marie's) despite being back to taping off the speaker phone.

GENE MONTERASTELLI
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 11:23 minutes and is 10.66mb, taped 02/23/07)
BIO: Since 1996 Gene has been 52% (he out weighs his business partner) of APeX Ministries. As a performance ministry APeX combines death defying juggling, sketch comedy, drama, and personal testimony. Gene can get out of a straight jacket, pick off little green army men with a bull whip, ride a unicycle, ride a mini bike, juggle five balls, eat fire, and do a handful of card tricks (not all at once). Gene is a fellow collaborator on the Resources for Living and Hope and blogs regularly at http://brblue.org/blog.
  QUOTE TO NOTE:

Inside the Youth Ministers’ Studio:
The last time that you were out and saw a great adult to a good job of coordinating (youth) ministry services, it looked like…?
Gene: It looked like someone managing a whole bunch of adults. Their responsibility, on some level, wasn’t to the young people, at all. They were definitely the public face and they were the ones that did the greeting at the door, but most of their work was coordinating with the adults to make sure everything that was happening was happening well. It was the (other) adults job to interact individually with the young people. It was other high school students’ job to interact with the students coming through the door.

OBSCURE FACTOID: Gene and I first met on the exhibit hall floor at the NCCYM in Orlando in 1996.  I kept sending female youth ministers from Baltimore over to his exhibit area to stand still as Brad and Gene tossed bolwing pins pass them.
BEHIND THE SCENES:  This was my second face-to-face interview. Last minute editing continues. Sigh!
  BLOG REFLECTION:

MIKE ST. PIERRE
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 10:17 minutes and is 10.98mb, taped 02/26/07)
BIO: Mike St. Pierre is the Director of Franciscan Youth Ministry at Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore. With over ten years of lay ministry and a track record for success, Mike brings insight and experience to issues of faith and personal productivity.  Mike is a fellow collaborator on the Resources for Living and Hope and blogs regularly at http://mikestpierre.blogspot.com
QUOTE TO NOTE: (re: Catholic Identity) A lot of communities struggle with how do we use this institution, whether it is a hospital or a high school, to pass along our heritage, but the more proximate question for me is how do I help that teacher who is passionate about lacrosse; how do I help them be more passionate about Jesus?
OBSCURE FACTOID: Mike brings a whole "professional;" stance to his ministry, constantly looking at the best practices of the ministry field and looking to make applications to his ministry and teaching
BEHIND THE SCENES:  After some coaching from a friend and next week's interviewee, I modified my own voice level a bit with the microphone.  Still learning.  Also, I have been a disaster the last three weeks with last minute editing- which is not fair to the interviewees who do not get their promised advance look.

MARK PACIONE
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 10:27 minutes and is 10.98mb, taped 01/20/07)
BIO: Mark Pacione has been the Director for the Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministries in the Archdiocese of Baltimore for over two decades. Beyond an office staff of six, he also watches over college campus ministry and the Msgr. O'Dwyer Reatreat House.
  QUOTE TO NOTE:
Young people are my “holy door” always.  They are the door to what is holy. They are the door to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. They are the door to my faith.
OBSCURE FACTOID: Mark is an excellent cook. Like many other productions in which Mark has been involved, his creativity and passions are multi-tasked until the final product is plated before you. . . always delicious, filling, and warm.
BEHIND THE SCENES:  Still learning as I'm playing along.  When this was taped, I only knew how to mic up the phone conference call, and did not trust the mic holding/ passing.  I've since done that twice, so the fact that this was taped while we were separated by our office walls now seems silly,

MARK OESTREICHER
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 11:44 minutes and is 10.98mb, taped 01/13/07)
BIO: Mark Oestreicher (Marko) is the president of Youth Specialties. For over 30 years Youth Specialties has worked alongside Christian youth workers of just about every denomination and youth-serving organization by providing publications, training, and leadership. Marko has a thoughtful, well-hyperlinked, funny/rude, personal blog which is found at www.ysmarko.com.
  QUOTE TO NOTE:
This is an area where a lot of youth workers and churches, in general, go wrong in terms of discipleship and that’s they just treat it (discipleship) as a program or a component of their youth ministry rather than the goal of the ministry. The command of Christ is that we go into the world and create disciples. And that’s what the whole point of youth ministry is about.  . . . Discipleship is what we should be all about.
OBSCURE FACTOID: During the conversation, Marko talks about the challenges of "attractional" ministry.  Since the taping, he expanded on these thoughts in this blog entry.   Days later, Dr. Leonard Sweet also addressed this theme at Baylor.  This line of discussion should NOT be obscure in any youth ministry field, let alone Catholic youth ministry.
BEHIND THE SCENES:  Ahhh, an editing confession - When this was taped, my Baltimore Ravens and Marko's home team, the San Diego Chargers, both looked as if they were might be NFL playoff rivals. Therefore, the call started off with some trash talk, mostly on my part. Unfortunately, both teams lost their home games during next weekend.

SR. EILEEN MC CANN
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 10:17 minutes and is 9.47mb, taped 01/20/07)
BIO: Eileen McCann is a Sister of Saint Joseph of Carondelet.  She is presently the
Coordinator for Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Secretariat for Family, Laity, Woman, and Youth for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
QUOTE TO NOTE: (Discipleship is about transmitting) the message that we are both Good Friday and resurrection people. Sometimes when we use that word, discipleship, we get sucked into that Good Friday image – the notion that we need to suffer, that we need to do the hard stuff which is certainly a part of it  – but there is also a joy that come with that. . . . But, the big thing to teach young people is that Good Friday and Easter Sunday are one event and without Good Friday, there would be no Easter Sunday. And without Easter Sunday, Good Friday does not make any sense. . . There is Alleluia that goes along with (our faith.)
OBSCURE FACTOID: Sr. Eileen has played along in an NCAA March Madness basketball pool for the past few years.  What any fellow player can confirm for you is that, for certain, Sr. Eileen is a staunch defender of her home team, the Syracuse Orange.  For those watching, they are 17-8 overall, 6-5 in the Big East and are nowere to be found on the AP Top 25.

BEHIND THE SCENES:  This was part of a series of three tapings in one day.  There is some minor mic adjusting at the beginning, but, beyond that, no real tech glitches.  I think this may have been the most conversational of the interviews thus far.

MICHAEL HART
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 9:56 minutes and is 9.31mb, taped 02/03/07)
  BIO:
As you'll hear in the interview, Michael has taken on new responsibilities with coordination of the Australian Archdiocese of Brisbane's celebration of World Youth Day. He has worked with the Youth and Children's Ministry (YCM) team assists deaneries and parishes to nurture Catholic Christian spirituality in young people from sacramental initiation to early twenties.
  QUOTE TO NOTE:
What we learned about the Vision of Youth Ministry: "We don't have one solid vision for ministry with young people.  But, for the last two decades, we've look to the United States and particularly that statement as out guiding principles. The (Australian) bishops have offered different pastorals and a number of statement along the way but not as significant as a Vision of Youth Ministry and Renewing the Vision.

BEHIND THE SCENES:  This was taped at the NFCYM's annual membership meeting in Colorado Springs.  It was my first face-to-face interview which offered me my first  opportunity to set up, pass a mic back and forth, and be hospitable.  (I got Michael a glass of water before the interview.)  We were in a hotel conference hallway so we also were in stop-and-go mode and various people and the ambient cell-phone conversations passed by.

BECKI KAMAN
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 8:19 minutes and is 7.78mb, taped 01/20/07)
  BIO:
Becki is the Coordinator for Youth Ministry at St. Francis of Assisi in Fulton, Maryland.  She is a staff member for the Justice Action Week (JAW) program for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  She was recent named as chair of the “Servant (leadership) Team” of the Association of Professional Youth Ministers.
  QUOTE TO NOTE:
I think that just found that God has given me the gifts that I need to serve in this role, in this ministry.  It’s something I feel that I do well and that I able to make a difference in the lives of our young people and their families. I can’t fight that. If that’s what God has given the gifts for, then I need to keep on doing it.
OBSCURE FACTOID: I was part of Becki’s interview team.  It was a large committee and there was a lot, A LOT, of youth ministry experience and expertise in the room.  I asked her publicly if she would find the group intimidating and she responded no.  Later, in the interview, she corrected me in front of the whole group adding “Hey, I’m not intimidated by the likes of you.”  The interview committee howled and she was hired.

BEHIND THE SCENES:  This was taped on Jan. 20 but was edited the night before posting, all in an effort to maintain the Wednesday schedule.  Let’s not do THAT again, shall we…?

BLOG REFLECTION: can be read here for Jan. 31.

ANNA SCALLY
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 10:00 minutes and is 9.37mb, taped 01/02/07)
  BIO:
Anna is the President of Cornerstone Media, Inc., in Santa Rosa, California. Anna is an inspiring workshop and youth rally speaker, youth ministry training consultant, and a disc jockey. She was M.C. of the catechetical sessions for 77,000 young people at Mile High Stadium in Denver for World Youth Day. She has recently written Keys to Happiness. Anna received the National Catholic Youth Ministry award in 2006. More here.
QUOTE TO NOTE: (I'm involved in Catholic youth ministry because) I feel its my responsibility with the life I have been given. . . I've been blessed with people in my life who loved me and believed in me, and I know that I would have called that (experience) ministry.
OBSCURE FACTOID: Anna does not always know what song will be a hit.  Once, I sat with her in a country-western karaoke bar on Saint Patrick's Day in Caldwell, Idaho.  We left after this one angry young woman sang what we both thought was the most awful song we had heard in recent memory.  Two weeks later, we were stunned to see it began climbing the pop charts.  That song??  Goodbye, Earl by the Dixie Chicks.
BEHIND THE SCENES:  Seriously, nothing in this life can be more painful than editing your own voice when it is placed alongside the professional dj's.  Also, there is some ambient ambulance wailing.  Sigh, think I'll head back to Caldwell. . .
BLOG REFLECTION: can be read here for Jan. 24.

MIKE PATIN
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 9:26 minutes and is 8.85mb, taped 12/29/06)
BIO: Mike is a Catholic "faith horticulturalist", having previously served for thirteen years in diocesan youth ministry for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Mike received the National Catholic Youth Ministry award in 2006. More here.
QUOTE TO NOTE: It helped me see- this is what youth ministry is about. They talked about their personal relationship with God. They talked about their dreams and how they would approach careers and still be people of faith and I sat there in awe. . .
OBSCURE FACTOID: Mike fell in love with Cologne, Germany. Unlike many others, however, it was not at World Youth Day.  He was the keynote presenter at the 2006 European Catholic Youth Conference.
BEHIND THE SCENES:  Mike's podcast, while third in rotation, was the first taped and edited and was made available to Irene, Bob, and next week's guest, Anna Scally.  The music on this podcast is actually the theme music from the TV inspiration for this podcast, Inside the Actors' Studio.

BOB McCARTY, D. Min.
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 8:28 minutes and is 7.93mb, taped 01/02/07)
BIO: This summer, Dr. Bob will begin his tenth year as Executive Director of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry. Bob received his doctorate of ministry from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana in May 1998. He continues to author resources for Catholic youth ministry and to provide training programs and presentations on ministry issues internationally. More here.
QUOTE TO NOTE: Catholic youth ministry has truly been a blessing to my own spirituality and to my own faith journey. I just have loved this ministry and it has been a wonderful opportunity for me to combine my gifts with my passion. . . (but also) Catholic youth ministry is a wonderfully subversive way to change the church.
OBSCURE FACTOID: Each New Year's Eve night, Bob and Maggie open their home for their "Loser's Party," offering a place for those who might have no other place to ring in the new year.  There is a whole slate of rituals and activities connected to the annual ringing in of the new year.
BEHIND THE SCENES:  I was still learning on the audio-taping side of life here.  Bob's voice picks up as a little louder (and clearer) than mine- - - but the effort was to record Bob so this is what we have.
BLOG REFLECTION: can be read here for Jan. 10.

IRENE FRIEND
LINK: here. (The podcast lasts 9:04 minutes and is 8.49mb, taped 01/02/07)
BIO: Irene was the diocesan director with decades of service in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Busy in "retirement,"  she finds herself wearing many hats- as a parish dre/cym, as a consultant, and as an active leader in national committees.  Irene received the National Catholic Youth Ministry award in 1992 and was recognized for her lifetime of service by the NFCYM in 2004.
  QUOTE TO NOTE:
(To empower young people to lives as disciples) means calling them forth, challenging them, encouraging them and walking with them to live the values that Jesus modeled for us in every day life, at school, at work, with our families and our friends - - - To be a person of compassion and empathy, of loving care and concern, in service to those in need and a champion of worthy causes and centered in prayer and worship.
OBSCURE FACTOID:  Although Irene is the first to be posted up, she was third interview.  She was, also, the third in a row to suggest that God would meet them at the Pearly Gates with a warm "Welcome Home."
BEHIND THE SCENES:  Irene was extremely gracious. She gave a wonderful interview and while I was editing it, I inadvertently lost the file.  Calling three hours later with much apologies, Irene repeated her interview and this is what we have before us. Music is from here.

INSIDE THE YOUTH MINISTERS' STUDIO

I am a big fan of Bravo's Inside the Actors' Studio.  If you have never seen it, you might be fooled into think it is just another celebrity interview show.  But, it's not.  It is and always has been a classroom.  The host, James Lipton, elicits for his students some of the basics of the craft of acting.
After fooling around with pod-casting in a scatter-shot way, I became determined to become slightly more serious about it.  Somewhere along the line, the concept occurred to open a pod classroom to discuss the craft of catholic youth ministry.  There is already a long "hit-list" of potential guests, many of whom are the "celebrities" of our field. Unlike the Bravo show, however, it is hoped that you will become introduced to some folks just like you and me who are our co-workers in the vineyard.
The classroom will open with a new guest every Wednesday.  The first podcast will be available on Wednesday, January 3.  I know that I am personally looking forward to this and hope you find it exciting as well!
